more: 1000 generations

more: 1000 generations

I’ve been beating a new drum and like playing a song over and over again on repeat, this is a beat I can’t get out of the my head.  In fact, I would say that this has become my heartbeat right now.

It’s this idea of 1000 generations…  The faithfulness and the obedience of just one person, following Jesus as Lord and Savior creating a legacy of lavish love on 1000 generations. This is a promise, not a pipe dream or pie-in-the-sky, but a promise from the Creator of the universe.  Stop for just 10 seconds and let this sink in to the deepest level of your being.  Past the responsibilities, the tasks of ministry and leadership that urge you to whisper past this and pause, stop, be still in this…

“He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands” Deut 7:9

As much as we already do to create spaces and environments, places and ethos for people to meet the Creator the vast Rocky Mountains and see the fingerprints of His very character in each face we encounter,

there is more.

There is more we can do, because see, for every single person who finds and follows Jesus, connects in a relationship of trust and faith with Him, there is this promise of lavish, unfailing love for 1000 generations.  A legacy that will reap reward and favor because someone did more.

With every sweet promise there is another side though, an opposing truth or reality.  It’s not a punishment as much as it is a natural consequence.  Cause and effect, if that, then this… There are literally 1000’s of generations not receiving this promise.  Are you feeling this heartbeat yet?

I don’t think the “more” that we need to do will be…

  • more programs
  • more events
  • more unique styles or
  • more creative ways to present the gospel.

I think all those things are good and needed and I love the creativity that we all bring to the table to connect people with our incredibly gracious, lavish and personal God.

But what if… what if the “more” simply came from equipping and empowering people.  Everyone.

“for you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Gal 3:26-28 NLT

Jesus called out truth in people, sometimes hard truth but always with grace and motivated by love and then sent them out.  Men and women, slave and Centurion.  He empowered them to lead, to be His hands and feet, to represent Him and to do it all again.  Jesus’ strategy was to come for us, give us life and unleash us into a new kind of freedom.  We are His plan.  You, you are the plan for 1000 generations to know and splash around in this lavish, unfailing love of God.

I believe it’s going to require us to do some things that fly in the face of tradition or below our churchy standards. It’s going to mean equipping and giving people opportunity to lead out, preach, teach and reach that are not typical or fit in our box… young leaders, women leaders, old(er) people, people that look different and maybe people that don’t have all the experience we think they should have.

It’s going to take all of us, every follower, every child of God, regardless of race, gender, and socio-economic status to be united and run toward making this reality for more.  Because, if we can stop for a minute and breath in this truth, we will see…there are 1000’s of generations that are waiting, searching, reaching believing and hoping that there is more.  More to this life, more to their purpose more they were created for…

and they would be right.

How can you champion more people to step into their purpose right where they are?  I’m dreaming big, God-sized dreams, running forward with a beat in my heart and a vision in front of me and I’ve never been more excited about the future.
